Mario Testino: between photography and memories

Mario Testino is considered one of the greatest fashion photographers.
He was born in 1954 in Lima, Peru, from an Irish mother and an Italian father. At the age of 22 he moved to London to begin his career in photography.
The beginning is not easy for anyone, not even for him who lived in a modest flat and earned his living by shooting young models.
The turning point came in 1983 when his work appeared for the first time in Vogue. This marked the beginning of his climb into the world of fashion, glossy magazines and major awards.

In 1997 he was commissioned to photograph Princess Diana for her famous Vanity Fair cover. Mario Testino began a long journey alongside the royal family.

His career is full of successes and awards.
One of his most popular projects is “The Towel Series“. It was created in 2014 and was inspired by Kate Moss standing on the back stage of a shoot with a towel and her hair hidden by a terrycloth turban. You can find them on his Instagram account.

Since the first shot, others have followed, with major players such as Selena Gomez, Zendaya, Blake Lively, but also Justin Bieber. Even supermodel Naomi couldn’t resist!

This series, in its simplicity, represents the beauty inherent in each character photographed.
The celebrities are free (or almost free) of make-up and designer clothes. They are them in all their authenticity and their personality comes through in their pose, their gaze, their strength.

In 2020 another project involving Italy comes to life. We are talking about “Ciao! Homage to Italy’. It is a collection of 140 photos divided into three parts. They are black and white and coloured photographs taken in 20 Italian cities.
The first part, called “In giro”, dates back to the 1970s. Testino had just arrived in Italy and portrays streets, religious festivals, working-class neighbourhoods, the mosaics of the Foro Italico in Rome and patrician villas.
In the second part, “Alla Moda” (At Fashion), fashion photography is collected and recounts the fashion shows, models, stylists and protagonists of the 1980s and 1990s in Milan: Gianni and Donatella Versace, Valentino Garavani, Carla and Franca Sozzani, Monica Bellucci and Dolce & Gabbana.
The latest, ‘Al mare’, is about holidays, beaches, the good life, ‘the sense of well-being that Italy has always given me’.

His mind is always active, in fact his latest creation is a project called ‘The wet series‘ where the protagonists wear only a wet T-shirt.
