Just under a month ago, photographer Mick Rock, born Michael David Rock, died at the age of 72. Rock‘s photographs made him famous for photographing the 1970s, led him to become like the soul of those years and work with the stars.
Who was Mick Rock
Mick Rock was born in London in 1948. He graduated in Medieval and Modern Language and Literature at Cambridge. Rock has always shown his passion for romantic poetry also in his photographic work. He became interested in photography while studying at Cambridge, in fact, it was during his years of study that he began photographing artists at their concerts.

Rock became famous for his iconic shots of rock’s biggest stars, chronicling the 1970s through his mythical shots of music stars. His notoriety stems from his work as David Bowie’s official photographer during the making of Ziggy Stardust and beyond. He accompanied Bowie during produce the albums Diamond Dogs and Aladdin Sane. For David Bowie he produced and directed music videos such as Space Oddity and Jean Genie. Mick Rock helped design the cover of Queen’s Bohemian Rapsody, suggesting the proper lighting to create something extraordinary. In 1972 Mick Rock helped design the cover for former Pink Floyd member Syd Barrett’s first solo album. The album was The Madcap Laughs and Rock contributed to the entire album artwork. Rock is not the only one who has worked on covers of albums by important artists, such as the Nirvana cover by photographer Kirk Weddle. A cover that has been the talk of the town.
Mick Rock has worked on more than 100 album covers creating many rock images. Mick Rock has not only shot for album covers but has also worked on many videos such as those for Bowie, recently making a new edit for Parlophone Records. Rock has also been the photographer for scenes in films such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Shortbus. Mick Rock has also photographed stars such as Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus, for whom he shot the album Plastic Hearts. He has also photographed stars such as Madonna and Alicia Keys.
